I understand that feeling, sadly, so no worries.  But … hmm.  That’s an interesting question.  With all my Marvel fic, I’m always worried I’m woobifying and sweetening them too much, that it isn’t real to who they are in canon, or complicated and sharp enough.  The thing I’ve struggled with the most is probably this longish and getting longer fic about MCU Tony and Rhodey post-Afghanistan.  First of all, I have a LOT of trouble writing Rhodey, and Rhodey and Tony’s relationship—I can never seem to get the tenor of it exactly right, with the deep emotion and caring without it being over-emotive or too … wibbly?  And I mean, there are some other considerations there, too, like military and medical and tech details that have caused me some issues.  The big World’s Most Wanted AU I’m working on has also given me a lot of trouble, and the over-woobieness of it is one of the big problems with it in my mind, too, and the fact that emotions keep getting out in the open and resolved too quickly.

As for projects being ready for the public soon … I don’t know.  My current to-do list for the next week is Tony/Rhodey confession fic (MCU), Tony/Rumiko stuff (one of about three ideas), Sharon/Steve pegging and oral smutfic, Pepper/Natasha (MCU), and Leliana/Morrigan.  Most of those are supposed to be short-ish, and I’m sure not all of them will be finished, but we’ll see.  I also really want to write a long Carol/Jessica fic for Femslash February, but I don’t know if that’s possible now, timing-wise.

For fics I have started that might be finished fairly soon, I have some long half-written Steve/Tony MCU porn and that Tiberius Stone and Tony and Steve thing.  And some bits and pieces of 616 Steve/Tony after their first time fic aaaand some 616 top!Tony/bottom!Steve d/s stuff?

Edit: OH, and I’m writing that MCU arc reactor theft story, too.  I have about two chapters, and it should be done soon-ish, at least.

I usually keep my mouth shut whenever I see these things because this isn’t the first time a post like this has crossed my dash but I’ve honestly just had my fill.

If you want smut in your fic, that’s perfectly fine, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying yourself the way you want to, but bitching about people who don’t read or write it (or who don’t write it as explicitly as you’d like) and who rate their fics appropriately for non-sexual Mature content is bullshit and needs to stop.

I don’t slut-shame people who like smut, I politely move on to something else I personally prefer, and it’d be nice to have the favor reciprocated instead of being treated like it is some horrible error on someone else’s part because they have inconvenienced you by failing to provide you with the porn you were looking for.

I got piled on as a prude and a slut-shamer the last time I said anything like this but I just don’t care anymore.

Yeah, seriously.  Look, a lot of the fics I’ve written that are rated mature are rated mature for reasons other than the sexual content one way or another.  I happen to think graphic violence or disturbing emotional content deserves that M rating, not just sexual things.  ”What You Have Created” is rated highly because of the mental degradation, torture, and violence, not because there’s sexual content, because the sexual content isn’t that explicit (though it is disturbing).  And I mean, come on, it’s not like I’m personally insulted by fics that aren’t what I’m looking for.  Just click the back button and move on.  I don’t get the entitled attitude.  Most fics aren’t what I’m looking for, but so what?  Reading them took up what, fifteen minutes of my life?  So does waiting for a bus; it’s not a big deal.  Mature means … mature content, which is certainly not limited to sexual things.  Violence is a lot more potentially mentally scarring than smut and I think it’s important to rate for it.  (You could also try reading the summary; it usually kind of makes clear what kind of fic it is, and whether or not it’s likely to be porny.)

So, I totally failed to finish the draft for my Marvel Big Bang fic on time, so … oh well.  I have a lot written, but I’ll probably just end up finishing it on my own time.  I’ve had a lot of trouble writing at all lately, so it’s probably for the best to take it easy for a bit, anyway.  Disappointed in myself, but that’s how it goes!

I want to talk about writing self-indulgent fanfic.

To be perfectly honest, I want to talk about writing self-indulgent fanfic because I’m currently struggling to give myself permission to write self-indulgent fanfic. So I’m sorting this all around in my head anyway, and I might as well try to put it into words in case it helps anyone else.

Sometimes I see people who say, in their summaries/author’s notes/tags/other header or footer info, something along the lines of “this is horribly self-indulgent oh god why am i even posting it i guess apparently people read this stuff?”: something small and self-deprecating and ashamed. And it makes me—honestly, it makes me—sad.

This is a beautiful post. Thank you. I never intended to post my own Dragon Age story, for pretty much this reason. I thought no one else would ever want to read it, and it would just be an embarrassment for me to post it. But I was wrong about that, and there are people who are reading and enjoying it, and I’m so glad I didn’t decide to talk myself out of posting it for being “self-indulgent.” So glad.

This is a great post.  I’m definitely one of those people who has that voice inside me telling me not to post the stuff I feel is too self-indulgent.  So … thank you for this post, and yes, just … yes.  I think this is so important.  Because what is fandom about, really, other than enjoyment and enthusiasm and passion and emotion?  We wouldn’t be here unless we wanted to be.
