So. Um. I said I wanted to do a bit of a finish-up to the Alistair alphabet with some meta regarding Alistair. I also said it would be short. Ahem. I lied, it clocks out at about 1400 words. Read on if you’re brave! (image is from the TV Tropes DA page, by the way)
Like any other kid, I played some Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart, but my first real introduction to how awesome games could be was Dragon Age, and my first introduction to how complex and fascinating video game characters could be was Alistair.
I cannot even tell you how much I love you right now for this post. This describes everything I love about Alistair and how he was written, and does it so well.
Because he is such a complicated character, who goes through a tough, wrenching storyline, and there is so much depth to his character, and I just really agree with everything you’ve said here.
Because he is an idealist, and he is soft, and he has had that hard life, and he really is being introduced to how much life can suck for the first time. He’s emotional and somewhat naive (but not stupid), and lonely, and starved for affection, and good-hearted, and all of it. I can never harden him either—I like that he believes that people are good, that he’s an optimist. Sure, a harder edge might be better in some ways, but I don’t think it’s necessarily better for him, or necessary.
Anyway, yes. Yes, to all of this. This is an awesome post.
